Barry Kleider, Conie Borchardt, and Sheronda Orridge conceived of Arts Responding to Foreclosure as a lab project during the Creative Communities Leadership Institute (CCLI) last spring. CCLI, a six-month training seminar, hosted by Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis, brought together 25 artists and community organizers around the question of how to use the arts to improve our neighborhoods.
Sheronda was already fighting to get her mortgage modified. One day she called Barry and Conie to cancel a team meeting. After listening to her frustrations, Barry and Conie suggested we take up the issue of foreclosure, Sheronda’s individual situation, and the Frogtown community as our project. We worked together another three months establishing partnership with Frogtown Neighborhood Association and writing grants to fund this project.
